Welcome to Practical Magic a blog party

Of all the movies about witches and living life as one, I am, as are so many of us, just taken away when I watch Practical Magic. Not that it holds more truth or more feeling or more witchiness but there is a quality to the movie, that mesmerizes me.

The movie is so different from the book and the screenplay. And I must say this is the exception to the rule, I do like the movie much more. Frannie, Jet, Sally and Gilly are woman to be reckoned with, a force of nature. The Aunts are who I aspire to be like.

I could go on and on about my love of the movie as a whole but I will instead, call to your attention my favorite portions of the movie.

The first is Sally's "unlove" spell, Amas Veritas. The scene as Sally picks the white rose petals, paperwhites and sets the spell in motion while Stevie Nick's Crystal plays in the background. The music and the mood are haunting and you just know it is prophetic and wonderful as the magic spreads across the vast expanse to the boy who will fulfill her life and complete her spell.

Amas Veritas
He will hear my call a mile away.
He will whistle my favorite song.
He can ride a pony backwards.
He can flip pancakes in the air.
His favorite shape will be a star.
And he'll have one green eye and one blue.

The second is the "toady infestation" from where the zombie Jimmy will come out of the ground to inhabit Gilly and take her back to be his own. Quite an icky mess of ugliness and yet......kinda funny. Bags of toads being dumped out from under poor Gilly/Jimmy.

Third has to be the Midnight Margarita scene with the accompanying "Lime in the Coconut" song. This is where the foursome carry on a most interesting conversation about each other while under the influence of Diablo Tequila as provided by someone at the door. My favorite quote from that scene is: "since when has being a slut been a crime in this family?"

Midnight Margaritas Incantation
Filet of fenny snake in cauldron, boil and bake.

Eye of newt, toe of frog, wing of bat, tongue of dog.
Adder’s fork and blind worm’s sting…
Barbados lime is just the thing.
Cragged salt, like a sailors stubble…
Flip the switch, and let the cauldron bubble.

And lastly the closing of the movie when Sally gives this thought as the family of witches jumps off of the roof on Halloween night while holding their umbrellas.

Can love really travel back in time and heal a broken heart?
Was it our joined hands that finally lifted Maria's curse?
I'd like to think so.
But there are some things I know for certain:
Always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder,
keep rosemary by your garden gate,
plant lavender for luck,
and fall in love whenever you can.

Thank you so much for dropping by to visit and read my post for Practical Magic at Practically Magickal. I do so appreciate it.

What a magickal post. I agree the movie is better than the book in so many ways. Your giveaway is so fun too. Chocolate toads? Margarita glasses? Count me in. Now I'm off to see what else is being offered for this magickal blog party.

What lovely gifts - happily following you here as well as elsewhere.

I didn't get my personal act together enough to join the party this year, but enjoying following along with everyone else!

My favorite scene (well other than all that you mention - so many high points!) is when the townswomen 'get it' and understand that these women they were afraid of aren't so different after all, and snap to it helping her get past her bad penny ex-boyfriend obsession. "Let's clean house!"

Yea Linda...I've only watched Practical Magic once...I don't remember all those scenes...guess I need to watch it again...Please enter me in your giveaway...

Loved your post, Linda. You're right, the book and the movie are completely different from each other and this is one of the rare occasions when I love the movie far more than the book. I also just love the Aunts. the whole movie and all the characters are just, well, magical.

I hope you are having a simply beautiful day today and I hope you'll visit me for my PM party post as well.

I love this post because I love the movie's spells, particularly Amas Veritas. It makes me think of the things I wished for, when I began to realize that at one point in my life I would want to share myself with someone. I wasn't young when I started wishing... I wanted a guy who loved me so much that I would wake up every day extremely happy of being exactly who I was just because that was exactly who he wanted too. That is a difficult wish. And I got him. And he is handsome. And talented. And with a heart that barely fits in his chest.

I am a follower.

P.S. I forgot to post my giveaway *sigh* I guess I'll post it in a few days.

Great post. I agree, the book and the movie are very different, but I love them both. The aunts are much nicer in the movie than the book, however.

Dear Linda,

First of all, a big thanks for your support -- your kind words cheered me up. :)

I just love your Practical Magic post. The spells, the photos to make them come to life...

You are a sweetheart to offer door prizes, too. The cactus glasses are a hood. If you know me better, you soon discover my love for all things Old West, so I couldn't help but smile seeing those glasses. :)

Magical Times
and a HUGE hug,
Birgit

Oh I so love this film too, and I can't explain why, it certainly draws you in. I read the book after last year's blog party, and wasn't really that keen on it, although I did like another book of hers. I think you get attached to one or other of films of books, and the film in this case was a definite winner! May have to watch it again tomorrow night, you've just put me in the mood (bit late tonight!)

Oh Linda, such a magical party! You and I both seem to have the same favorite parts of this wonderful movie. Kindred spirits and all.

I want you to know that you are just like those aunts and that, my dear friend, is why so many of us look up to you and can't seem to get enough of our dear, sweet Oma.

And yummy...chocolate frogs! I'll bet they are full of protein. ;-) Hugs to you!
